The calculator prices a single insulation project from the inputs you enter and returns an itemised planning estimate rather than one average figure. It works out how much additional R-value your project needs, converts that into a material quantity, prices the material, then adds installation labour or DIY equipment, plus removal and preparation where they apply.

How to Use the Insulation Cost Calculator

The fields below appear in the same order as the calculator. Each one changes the estimate in a specific way.

1. Enter the project area

Enter square footage directly, or switch to length × width and let the calculator multiply for you (Area = Length × Width). For an irregular space, split it into rectangles, calculate each and add them together. Area drives material quantity, labour time and removal pricing, so it moves the estimate more than any other input.

2. Choose where the insulation goes

Attic floor, attic roof deck, ceiling, exterior wall, floor, crawl space and basement are all supported. Your choice changes which materials the calculator offers, the target R-value logic it applies, and the labour rate — a crawl space is priced above an open attic for the same material.

3. Choose the insulation material

Material sets the unit cost, the R-value per inch, the installation method and therefore the quantity. Blown fiberglass, blown cellulose, dense-pack cellulose, fiberglass batt, mineral wool, open- and closed-cell spray foam and rigid foam board are all priced on their own basis.

4. Select new, add or replace

New assumes bare joists or an empty cavity. Add credits usable existing insulation toward your target, so you only buy the shortfall. Replace removes the old material first and prices a full installation on top.

5. Enter your existing insulation

Give the type and either the depth in inches or a known R-value. The calculator converts depth to R-value and subtracts it:

Needed R = Target R − Existing R

That single subtraction is what makes an add-over project cheaper than a from-scratch one. Damaged or contaminated material is not credited, because it is not delivering its rated performance.

6. Set the target R-value

Leave it on the recommendation and the calculator applies ENERGY STAR retrofit guidance for your climate zone on an attic floor; other assemblies use typical planning targets rather than code determinations. 7. Choose DIY or professional installation

Professional adds an installation labour line. DIY removes it and adds blower rental and supplies instead. Dense-pack and two-component spray foam are priced as professional-only, so the DIY option is disabled when you select them.

8. Add removal or preparation

On a replacement you can include removal, exclude it, or choose “not sure” — which shows removal as a conditional add-on rather than charging it. Attic air sealing is an optional preparation line where the application supports it.

How the Estimate Is Calculated

The calculator runs one chain, in this order:

Estimated Total = Material + Labour or DIY Equipment + Removal + Preparation

Material comes first. The calculator subtracts your existing R-value from the target, divides the remainder by the material’s R-value per inch to get an installed depth, then converts that depth into a quantity — bags from manufacturer coverage charts for loose-fill, coverage for batts, board feet for foam — and prices it.

Labour is priced per square foot for blown and batt work and per board foot for spray foam, then adjusted for the application. If materials plus labour fall below a typical contractor minimum, the minimum sets the total instead, which is why very small jobs carry a high effective rate per square foot. Selecting a state applies a planning-grade cost tier — five bands from roughly −12% to +25% — fully to labour and at half strength to materials, because retail material prices vary less by region than labour rates.

The calculator uses national planning ranges and broad regional adjustments. It is intended for budgeting and quote comparison, not as a contractor bid.

Cost per square foot is a comparison metric, not a universal rate. The gap between the material-only row and the installed row is the whole reason quotes look so different from each other: a material price and an installed price are not the same number, and a quote that looks unusually cheap is usually quoting a narrower scope.

Two things pull a project away from these bands. Spray foam is priced per board foot rather than per square foot, so its rate climbs with every extra inch of depth. And on jobs under roughly 400 square feet the contractor minimum sets the price instead of the area, which lifts the effective rate well above the table. Use these bands to sanity-check a quote, then run your own project through the calculator for the number that actually applies to it.

Notice the per-square-foot column barely moves across the table. That is because at these sizes material and labour already clear the contractor minimum, so doubling the area roughly doubles the total — the relationship is close to linear once the minimum stops interfering. Below roughly 400 square feet it stops being linear and the minimum takes over.

Two inputs move the number more than the rest. Square footage comes first, because material, labour and removal all scale from it. Target R-value comes second, because it sets the installed depth and the depth sets the quantity — going from R-30 to R-60 on the same attic roughly doubles the material line without changing the labour much.

Existing insulation is the only input that pulls the total down. Usable material already in place is R-value you do not have to buy again, and the calculator credits it directly against your target. The reverse is also true: choosing replace throws that credit away and adds removal on top, which is why a replacement typically prices at roughly double an add-over on the same attic.

The remaining inputs adjust the result rather than drive it. Location, accessibility and air sealing move the total by a margin; area, R-value and what is already up there decide what order of magnitude you are in.

Materials Available in the Calculator

Selecting a material changes the quantity logic as well as the price. Loose-fill is priced in bags from coverage charts, batts by coverage area, and foam by board foot — so the same target R-value produces very different quantities.

The R-per-inch column is what drives the quantity. A material at R-2.5 per inch needs roughly 19.6 inches to reach R-49; one at R-3.5 needs about 14. The thinner material is not automatically cheaper, though — denser products cover less area per bag, so depth and coverage pull in opposite directions and the calculator resolves both into one figure.

Pick the area first, because it filters everything after it. The calculator will not offer loose-fill for a basement wall or rigid board for an attic floor, and it applies a different labour multiplier to each — a crawl space is priced above an open attic for identical material and area.

Estimating attic insulation cost

The attic is the most common project run through this calculator, and it is handled as two separate applications. Attic floor is the vented case — loose-fill or batt laid over the ceiling, priced per square foot, and carrying the highest R-value targets in the house. Attic roof deck is the unvented case, sprayed against the underside of the roof and priced per board foot, which is why the two return very different totals for the same house.

How to Use Your Estimate When Comparing Quotes

The estimate is most useful once real quotes arrive. Put each quote next to your calculator result and check that they are describing the same job before you compare the totals:

Same square footage as the area you entered. Same material and same target R-value, since a quote at R-38 will always beat one at R-49. Removal included or excluded. Preparation and air sealing in or out. Disposal covered. And whether the number is a material or an installed price.

Ask each contractor to split labour from material, because that is the line where two quotes for the same attic usually diverge. A quote above your range is not automatically wrong — it may include scope your estimate did not — but the itemisation should show you exactly which line explains the gap, and a quote well below the range usually means something has been left out.
