Where the tool stops

It prices the foam and the labor to apply it. Structural repairs, permits, and stripping out old insulation are quoted on their own — and removing what’s already there is a job with its own price per square foot.

And it is working blind on one thing: your building. A crawl space with fourteen inches of headroom takes far longer than one you can kneel in. An attic reached through a bedroom closet costs more than one with a pull-down stair. Those show up on a quote, not in a calculator.

How to Use the Spray Foam Calculator

Four answers get you a number in about 30 seconds: which surface, how big it is, which foam, and how thick.

1. Pick the surface you are spraying

Attic roof deck, exterior wall, crawl space wall, rim joist, garage, or a metal building. Each one narrows the sensible foam type and the thickness that goes with it.

More than one surface? Price them separately. The tool carries a running total so you can see the whole building before committing to any part of it.

2. Enter the area

Measure the face you are covering. Not the floor plan.

  • Wall — length times height, minus anything large you are not spraying.
  • Attic roof deck — this is larger than the floor beneath it, because the roof slopes. A 1,500 sq ft footprint is usually 1,700 sq ft or so of deck.
  • Crawl space wall — the distance around the outside, times the wall height.

Use the floor figure by mistake and your estimate lands roughly 12% short before you have entered anything else.

3. Choose open-cell or closed-cell

The field that swings your number hardest. If you are unsure, closed-cell or open-cell settles it in about a minute.

4. Set the thickness, or the R-value

How Much Spray Foam Insulation Do I Need?

Multiply the area by the thickness. An attic roof deck of 1,700 sq ft sprayed 6 inches deep needs 10,200 board feet — and that single multiplication is the entire calculation.

Foam is the easiest insulation to quantify, and it is not close. No coverage chart to read off a bag. No settling to allow for. No package sizes to round up to. Just area times inches.

Take the surface in square feet, decide the depth in inches, multiply.

How much to spray foam a 2,200 sq ft house?

There is no single answer, because a house is not one surface.

Its exterior walls come to around 1,900 sq ft. Its attic roof deck is nearer 1,300 sq ft over two stories, or 2,500 sq ft if the whole thing sits under one pitched roof. Separate jobs, separate thicknesses, and frequently separate foams.

What Is a Board Foot in Spray Foam?

A board foot is one square foot of surface, sprayed one inch thick. So 500 sq ft at 2 inches is 1,000 board feet — and the same wall at 4 inches is 2,000.

That is the whole definition. Asked the other way round — what is board feet for spray foam — the answer is the same: it is the unit every quote you receive will be built from.

Why installers count this way and not in square feet

Batts and rolls come in fixed thicknesses, so a square-foot price tells you what you are getting. Foam has no fixed thickness — the same square foot can be sprayed at one inch or at six. Pricing it by area alone would be pricing a variable as if it were fixed.

The board foot folds the depth into the unit. That is what makes two foam quotes comparable, and it is why we quote in board feet rather than square feet.

How to calculate board feet for spray foam

Board feet = Area in square feet × Thickness in inches

There is no product-specific conversion and nothing to look up. A 1,200 sq ft crawl space ceiling at 3 inches is 3,600 board feet, whatever goes in the gun.

How many square feet does a 55 gallon drum of spray foam do?

A drum set is two 55-gallon drums — one of each chemical — bought as a pair. It is how installers buy, and an open-cell set covers several times the area of a closed-cell set, because open-cell is roughly a quarter of the density.

For a homeowner the honest answer is that drums are not your unit. You are buying a finished surface, and your quote will be priced on board feet.

DIY kits are the exception. Those are labelled by board feet on the box — 200, 600 and 1,000 are the common sizes. Take the number from the table above and match it to the box.

Closed-Cell or Open-Cell: Which Should You Enter?

Closed-cell delivers about R-6 per inch, stops water vapor and stiffens what it is sprayed on. Open-cell delivers about R-3.6 and costs roughly a quarter as much per board foot. No other field on this calculator moves your total as far.

Choose closed-cell when the space is damp or shallow

A crawl space wall is in permanent contact with soil that never fully dries. Closed-cell does not take up water, so it can be sprayed straight onto it. A rim joist — the band of timber where your floor meets the foundation — is a small strip that leaks badly, and one pass of closed-cell closes it.

The second case is depth. In a 2×4 wall you have 3.5 inches and no more. Closed-cell reaches R-21 in that space; open-cell reaches about R-13. When the cavity is fixed, density is the only lever left.

Choose open-cell for roof decks and interior walls

There is room for the extra inches up in a roof, no standing water, and the saving per board foot is substantial. It is also the quieter of the two, which matters on an interior wall between rooms.

The trade-off: open-cell lets vapor through. Correct on a ventilated roof deck. Wrong against damp masonry.

What both foams do that a batt cannot

They seal air and insulate in the same pass. That counts for more than most people expect. A thoroughly insulated house with gaps in it still bleeds heat through the gaps — which is why air sealing is usually its own line on an insulation quote, and is not one here.

They also bond to awkward shapes. Around pipework, cabling and irregular framing, foam fills what a batt would leave a gap beside on every side.

How Many Inches of Spray Foam Insulation Do You Need?

Three inches of closed-cell reaches R-18. Matching that in open-cell takes five inches. Thickness is the point where the two foams stop being interchangeable.

What R-value is 2 inches of spray foam?

Two inches of closed-cell comes to about R-12. Two inches of open-cell comes to about R-7.

Identical depth, nearly double the performance — because closed-cell packs roughly four times the material into the same space.

When the cavity picks the thickness for you

Sometimes the choice is made before you make it. A 2×4 stud bay gives you 3.5 inches. Open-cell fills it to about R-13, closed-cell to about R-21, and nothing gets you past the depth of the timber.

That is where closed-cell earns its price — not by being better foam, but by being the only one that fits.

Why closed-cell goes on in layers

Closed-cell is applied in lifts of roughly two inches, and each lift has to cool before the next one goes over it. A four-inch specification is two passes with a wait in between.

Your board feet do not change. Your job time does.

How to Calculate Spray Foam Insulation: The Formulas

Four steps, and only step 3 is real arithmetic: area × thickness turns 500 sq ft at 2 inches into 1,000 board feet. The rest is a lookup and a rate.

Step 1 — Find the area

Area = Length × Width

Measure the surface you are covering. On an attic roof deck, allow for the slope making it bigger than the floor below.

Step 2 — Find the thickness

Thickness = R-value you want ÷ R-value per inch

Use R-6.0 per inch for closed-cell and R-3.6 for open-cell.

Step 3 — Find the board feet

Board feet = Area × Thickness

Nothing to round and no chart to consult. This is the figure your quote is priced on.

Step 4 — Find the price

Estimated total = Board feet × Rate per board foot

Why “spray foam per square foot” is a misleading number

Foam gets advertised per square foot everywhere you look. On its own that figure is close to meaningless, because it never says how deep.

Two quotes at an identical price per square foot can be two inches apart. One lands at R-12, the other at R-24, and the cheaper-looking one may be the worse deal by a mile.

Per board foot removes the ambiguity, because the depth is inside the unit. If a quote gives you a square-foot price with no thickness attached, ask what the thickness is. Any installer should answer that in one sentence.

Closed-cell runs three to four times open-cell

Per board foot, that is the gap. The like-for-like gap is narrower, though, because closed-cell hits the same R-value in fewer inches — so you buy fewer board feet to get there.

Compare them at equal R-value and the real difference is closer to double than to quadruple.

How much does it cost to spray foam 1,500 square feet?

Three common versions of that project:

  • 1,500 sq ft of wall, closed-cell at 2 inches — 3,000 board feet, about $4,500 to $5,300
  • 1,500 sq ft of attic deck, open-cell at 6 inches — 9,000 board feet, about $3,400 to $4,500
  • 1,500 sq ft of crawl space wall, closed-cell at 2 inches — 3,000 board feet, about $4,500 to $5,300, plus more where access is tight

How Long Does a Spray Foam Job Take?

Most foam jobs are a single day, and the spraying is only three or four hours of it. A 10,000 board foot open-cell attic is roughly five hours with the gun moving — and about the same again in masking, setting up and clearing away.

Almost nobody publishes this, which is why the spray foam calculator above returns hours alongside the price.

The machine is never what slows a job down

Here is something the equipment specifications will not tell you. A rig can push far more foam per hour than any person can place.

Do the arithmetic and a standard setup could theoretically lay over 20,000 board feet of open-cell in an hour. Real crews manage around 2,750 — roughly a tenth of what the pump is capable of.

The bottleneck is not the machine. It is a person carrying a gun around rafters, repositioning, checking depth, and stopping every time the hose catches. Which is why the rig’s rated output tells you almost nothing useful about your own job — and why we work in board feet per hour actually achieved.

Where a day really goes

  • Unloading and setting up — an hour or so
  • Masking and covering — two to three hours on a retrofit, and this is the part that catches people out
  • Spraying — three to four hours
  • Trimming and clearing away — an hour at minimum

On a small closed-cell job, the masking genuinely outlasts the spraying. That is not padding a bill. Cured foam bonds to whatever it lands on, and taking it off costs many times what covering up would have.

When you get the space back

Expect the room to be out of use for 24 hours after we finish — ventilated, and nobody in it. Bigger jobs and closed-cell work sit at the longer end of that.

That is a day past the crew’s last day on site, so build it into your planning.

Spray Foam Calculator Examples: Three Worked Estimates

Three projects end to end: a 20 × 20 garage at 2,080 board feet, a 40 × 60 building at 16,200, and a 1,500 sq ft attic deck at 10,200. Each uses the four steps above.

Example 1 — A 20 × 20 garage

  2. Thickness — 2 inches, about R-12

  5. Time — 1.5 hours of spraying, but a full day on site

Read that last line twice. The gun is running for under two hours and the day is still gone — which is the masking, not the foam.

Example 2 — A 40 × 60 metal building

  1. Area — walls (200 ft around × 14 ft) plus roof (2,600 sq ft) = 5,400 sq ft
  2. Thickness — 3 inches, about R-11
  3. Board feet — 5,400 × 3 = 16,200 board feet

  5. Time — about 6 hours spraying, so a day and a half

Open framing and long uninterrupted runs make this the fastest foam work there is. The spraying is quick; the size is what pushes it past a single day.

Example 3 — A 1,500 sq ft attic roof deck

  2. Thickness — 6 inches, about R-22

Look again at step 1. The deck is larger than the floor underneath it, and entering the floor figure is how an attic foam estimate comes out short.

Spray Foam Insulation Quote: What We Need to Price It Exactly

Get the area right and the calculator lands within about 15%. A firm spray foam insulation quote needs four things the tool cannot see.

Your estimate already carries the board feet, the foam type and the thickness. That is most of a quote written for you.

The four things we check on site

  1. Access. Where the hose runs and whether a person can stand up. This shifts labor further than anything else here.
  2. What is up there now. Existing insulation usually has to come out before foam goes on — see attic insulation removal for what that involves.
  3. Cavity or deck depth. Sets the ceiling on the R-value anything can reach, and sometimes changes the foam.
  4. Anything that needs fixing first. A roof leak. A bathroom fan venting into the loft. Recessed lights that need boxing out. Foam buries all three permanently.

How accurate is a spray foam calculator?

The board feet are exact, because it is one multiplication with no chart to misread. The price arrives as a range, since access and existing conditions cannot be judged from a screen. Rely on the quantity and treat the money as a planning bracket.

How do I calculate how much spray foam insulation I need?

Measure the surface in square feet, pick a thickness in inches, and multiply the two. That gives board feet, which is what foam is sold and quoted in. The tool does it and adds price and hours.

What R-value is 2 inches of spray foam?

Around R-12 for closed-cell and around R-7 for open-cell. Closed-cell is about four times denser, which is where the difference comes from.

How many square feet does a 55 gallon drum of spray foam do?

It depends on the thickness, which is exactly why installers count in board feet instead. An open-cell set covers several times the area of a closed-cell set at the same depth. Buying a DIY kit? The box states its board feet directly.

Can I install spray foam myself?

Small kits exist and work well for rim joists and patches. A whole attic needs a heated rig, and getting the mix or the depth wrong leaves you with foam that never reaches its rated R-value. Kits for small jobs; a crew for anything structural.

Is spray foam worth the extra cost?

Entirely a question of where it goes. Given a deep, dry attic and no access problem, other materials reach the same R-value for less. Given a 3.5-inch cavity, a leaking rim joist or a crawl space that never dries, foam is often the only option that works at all — and it handles the air leakage in the same pass.

Do I need to remove old insulation first?

For foam on a roof deck, usually yes, because foam has to bond to the surface. For a crawl space wall or a rim joist, often not. It is one of the four things we check on site.

How long before I can use the room again?

Allow 24 hours from when the crew finishes, ventilated and empty. Larger jobs and closed-cell work sit at the longer end.

Does spray foam need covering with anything?

Inside living space, yes. Building code requires a thermal barrier over exposed foam — normally half-inch drywall — and in an attic or crawl space a lighter ignition barrier is usually enough. This calculator prices the foam, not the covering, so ask whether a barrier is needed before you compare two quotes. It is a common reason one comes in lower than another.

Is there a spray foam roofing calculator here?
